About San Juan Island...

After disembarking from the ferry you arrive in the town of Friday Harbor.
San Juan Island is known for its local flavor and many choices of lodging
and accommodations. You will not find any large hotels, San Juan Island
is a community of quaint inns and bed & breakfasts. Enjoy our many
restaurants, such as Middle Eastern, American, Thai, Chinese, Mexican,
Italian, Pacific Northwest with fresh caught seafood and a variety of
settings. Dine and view harbors, ponds, boats and vistas across the
water to neighboring islands. For a real treat collect your own oysters
at Westcott Bay or during the summer months visit the Farmers Market
for organic fruits and vegetables, goat cheese, fresh flowers and other
San Juan Island favorites. Visit our local winery with tasting room
at the vineyard. Pelendaba Lavender Farm is nearby with acres of lavender
in bloom through the summer months, and a gift shop open all year with
their lavender products.
Now that you've eaten, it's time to take in some sights. Some of the
more popular sights are the island's many county and state parks, from
Lime Kiln State Park, where you can view the Orca whales in certain
summer months, to South Beach, with its windswept fields, rabbit condos
and miles of driftwood beaches. San Juan County Park was the location
for the filming of Practical Magic, a movie starring Sandra Bullock
and Nicole Kidman. (The bluestone from the movie set now graces the
walks, porches and pond at the Highland Inn.) San Juan Island offers
spectacular scenery, wonderful nature walks and quiet moments around
every turn.
Activities on San Juan Island will keep you going non-stop the entire
trip. Try kayaking, whalewatching, boating, charter a flight, go hiking,
catch a ferry, golf, rent a moped or a bike, see a movie, go birding,
relive history, go fishing, see wildlife, shop, visit our many art galleries
with works by our outstanding island artists, or just hang out and read
a book.
From the original architecture of the oldest lime works west of the
Mississippi, Roche Harbor Resort, to the story of the whales at the
Whale Museum, San Juan Island boasts many opportunities for the visitor
to step back in time and see what the islands were like when life was
easier. Visit the American and British Camps to find out what the Pig
War was all about. Check out the Historical Museum or the Pig War Museum
for a more in depth history of our unique islands.
